The ‘Elemental Forces’ workshops series aim to offer experimental processes and innovative techniques to artists and creative practitioners who are looking to work in a more spontaneous manner. Under the careful facilitation of professional artists you will be guided through techniques that can be worked on paper or wood, using drawing, collage and painting as a basis of your creative inquiry.

Venue: MAD - Marvilla Art District, Rua Fernando Palha 1, 1950-131 Lisbon, Portugal

Elemental Forces: Drawing techniques using fire - Arta Raituma
16th Feb // 18 - 20.30h

Fire is an element of transformation, purging what it encounters. Arta will introduce you to this playful and seductive element that is a core principle in her artistic practice. Participants are invited to learn a self developed wood burning technique that creates a hazy, nuanced visual effect using the symbiosis of flame and organic surface. The poetic contradiction between fire and wood suggests a recollection of landscape, and you will be invited to explore dream-like and surreal inner scapes. Expanding upon techniques, you will also learn to use a pyrograph - a wood burning tool that allows you to ‘draw’ onto wooden surfaces. Various textures and patterns can be created, leaving dark brown scorch marks on the surface - various possibilities will be shown by the artist. more..

Elemental Forces: Wet-pasting collage techniques - Nina Fraser
23rd Feb // 18 - 20.30h
Water is cleansing, flowing and calming, yet unleashes destructive forces and requires careful consideration to be tamed. Nina will introduce you to this balancing element through manipulation of wet paper and glue. Using water as a tool, this workshop introduces a self developed technique of adhering paper called wet-pasting, a skill that is particularly useful to those looking for more interesting glueing techniques when working with collage or mixed media. The paper is permanently transformed, giving collages a laundered quality, removing the gloss of popular magazines and drawing attention to the cuts and tears of the technique. more...
