home, home again - ogmt

Explore a variety of collage and watercolour techniques in this two part workshop series that utilises imagery taken from magazine advertising and/or photography as a creative starting point for a personal interpretation of the theme ‘home, home again’. Reflecting on our relationship with exterior and interior spaces since the pandemic, we will draw influences from artist Franz Ackermann, who, in 1991 created his Mental Maps series, recollections of the streets outside that he explored through watercolours in his very small apartment in Hong Kong. These drawings, which include motifs from his travels all over Asia, are small abstracted visions of landmarks, incidents and journeys that reflect “a retrospective recording of the dynamism and energy” or “boredom and melancholy” of a location. The Mental Maps are cartographic abstractions that address emotional traces and physical impact of urban space
'Home, home again' part I - Collage
Tues 15th Feb 10 - 1pm
Since the pandemic travel has become limited, and we may have lost the ability to imagine the concept of ‘foreign’ or ‘exotic’. We will use collage as a technique to expand our horizons, creating visual connections though assorted imagery, channelling both intuitive and conscious decision making processes in our selection. You may bring your own photography to work with, or simply choose magazines (supplied). No other preparation is required

'Home, home again' part II - Watercolour techniques
Tues 22nd Feb 10 - 1pm Fully booked
A workshop designed to explore a variety of watercolour techniques to translate collage to watercolour painting. By exploring stages of the process you can discover true freedom through the watercolour technique, a medium that is fluid and versatile, yet difficult to control.  By creating boundaries within the process you will discover true freedom through the watercolour technique, a medium that is fluid and versatile, yet difficult to control. We will explore alternative shapes as frames to work within, avoiding traditional landscape styles and supports. We will use the artist Franz Ackermann as an influence in our work, exploring his enthusiastic use of colour, system of signs, fragmented painting techniques and sensitivity to translating his surroundings as “an uprooted relationship, rushed, made up of crossings, of trips that never become a 'journey,' perceptions that never are transformed into relationships (either with places or with other people), of places that never constitute a 'place.'" (Artforum).  more...
