'Memory is, in essence, romantic - it edits our experience of events as they really occurred, of journeys as they were actually lived - often leaving us with only half-glimpsed fragments, whose power is in their mystery''
From 'Collage for the Soul', Holly Harrison & Paula Grasdal Through recording the visual experiences of a journey, this series explores the notion of memory in unfamiliar landscapes. Using imagery from magazines as well as personal photography, aspects of architectural detail are cropped and highlighted, combining both the modern and decaying in an amalgam of time and place. Any sign of human presence has been carefully removed, allowing space for the viewer to construct their own narrative. Inspired by surrealism and hinting at the optical illusions of Escher, this series aims to question our notions of reality, perspective and dreams. |
